Tanalbit® is a drug-free, anti-mycotic aral preparation. The formula is based on the powerful astringency of natural tannates which have been carefully selected with regards to their affinity to proteins, fat solubility and degree of methylation. The other components of Tanalbit are Chitin (N-acetyl-glucosamine derivatives) extract and Lotus rhizome extract which provide powerful synergistic antimycotic and antimicrobial chemistry. Tannates are powerful antifungal substances that act through their agglutinating/astringent effects. They bind irreversibly to lipoproteins and lectins on the surface of the fungal membranes. As a consequence, the fungal cell loses its ability to adhere to the host’s epithelial membrane and the ability to colonize. The tannate covered surface blocks fungal metabolism, and agglutinates them. Rapid atrophy of the fungal membrane follows resulting in the death of the fungal cell. Chitin extracts provide, by the same mechanism, protection against gastrointestinal colonization by Candida albicans. Extracts of the Asiatic Holy Lotus carry potent antifungal factors which inhibit filamentous fungi growth. Lotus rhizome extract was found to be synergistic with tannate and chitin components of Tanalbit® by our chromatographic evaluations.
