Ginseng
Known as 'the
king of herbs,' Ginseng, is uniquely associated with
the enhancement of human life. Ginseng is a prime example
of an adaptogenic substance, that is, a nutritional
substance that helps a person adapt optimally to environmental
and social changes so as to promote radiant health, longevity,
wisdom and success in our endeavors.
Ginseng has been
used for thousands of years. It has been considered extremely
valuable since very ancient times. As a result, there are
hundreds of lesser varieties available for popular, commercial
consumption. The vast majority of products commercially available
in America, Asia and Europe use lower grades of commercial
Ginseng in order to keep the price down. These lower quality
Ginseng roots lack the broad spectrum of ginsenosides
and other active phytonutrients found in higher quality Ginseng.
They not only lack the subtlety, but are often so imbalanced
that they produce side effects such as headaches, stiff neck

Since there are
many varieties of Ginseng, each with its own qualities and
benefits to humans, it is essential that each variety be carefully
selected. There are eight primary types of Ginseng, but even

In the case of
the wild roots used in the Ron Teeguarden's Exquisite Ginseng
Extracts line, each is selected based on age, source and shen
('spiritual power'). The Chinese wild roots are certified
genuine and all are from Chang Bai mountain, which is the

It is traditionally
believed that within each wild root there is a 'Ginseng Child'
which will serve those who consume the root. According to
legend, wild Ginseng from Chang Bai Mountain has magical powers,
including the ability to generate 'happiness eternal.' In
any case, all wild roots are believed in Asia to contain enormous
amounts of extremely high levels qi (vitality) and
shen (Spirit). Qi is our physical and mental
vitality, and shen is our Spiritual power. The older
the root and the tougher its living conditions, the greater
the Qi and Shen developed and stored in the
root.
Real wild Chang
Bai Mountain Ginseng roots are now very rare. Very old ones
(over 50 years old) are extraordinarily expensive even in
China, and especially in cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai and
Tokyo. Such 'grandfather' roots have been known to sell in
Asia for as much as $100,000 for a one ounce root! These old
roots are found in the deepest mountains of northern China.
Professional Ginseng hunters, even though they may spend almost
every day of their lives looking for Ginseng, may find only
a few of these very old roots in their lifetime, and most
never find a truly ancient root. However, such roots form
the basis of the extraordinary Heaven Drops and Earth
Drops extracts.
Ginseng also
grows wild on the American continent. This is known as wild
American Ginseng. American Ginseng is also cultivated in America,
but this farmed Ginseng is much weaker than the wild variety.
Wild American roots contain considerable qi and shen.
Wild American Ginseng is regarded as being a powerful
yin tonic, which means that it is moistening and nourishes
the body fluids of all the organs and tissues of the body.
Old roots are very expensive, but not quite as much so as
their Chinese counterparts. Wild American Ginseng, because
of its rejuvenating qualities, is considered a premium anti-aging
substance.
Additionally,
there are several herbs generally called 'Ginseng' because
they are in the same botanical genus as Ginseng and share
very similar chemistry. However, their effects on humans may
differ from those of Panax Ginseng, the standard Chinese variety.
For example,
'Siberian Ginseng' (Acanthopanax or Eleutherococcos)
is actually a shrub that looks nothing like Ginseng. However,
like true Ginseng, it contains biologically active chemical
constituents known as saponins. All Ginsengs contain
at least eight or ten different saponins. These saponins are
the main active agents in all the Ginsengs. In Chinese Ginseng
(Panax Ginseng) they are called ginsenosides, and in
Siberian Ginseng they are called eleutherosides. It
appears that there are actually dozens of different saponins
found in the Ginseng family, all having profound benefits
to humans. It is this range of saponins that distinguishes
Ginseng from other herbs and nutrients. They generate the
adaptability associated with Ginseng.
But it is important
to remember that a Ginseng product cannot be judged merely
on its total amount or percentage of saponins.
This is one of the great misconceptions concerning Ginseng.
These saponins are extremely valuable in the right quantity
and, much more importantly, in the right proportions.
As Ginseng roots mature and become older, they may or may
not contain large quantities of saponins, but the proportions
of different kinds of saponins develop so that older roots
have far more benefits when consumed by humans. That is why
old wild roots may have a far more profound influence on our
health and well being.
The chemistry
of a Ginseng root is related to its seed stock, to the soil
and climate in which it grows and to the length of time it
grows in the earth. It is commonly believed that the older
a root is, the greater its powers. The chemical subtleties
of a Ginseng root changes over time. Its balance is perfected
and intensified as the Ginseng struggles to survive numerous
Manchurian winters and summers. Those roots that survive for
decades are considered to be virtually the 'elixir of the
immortals' in Asia.
There is a vast
number of well known and not-so-well known Ginseng products
on the market which use cheap commercial Ginseng, and some
'standardize' these products by adding a certain percentage
of purified ginsenosides made from Ginseng leaves and stalks.
To some extent standardization is a marketing ploy used by
manufacturers to convince consumers (and the FDA) that their
product reaches a set minimum standard. These products may
indeed be useful, but they are not in any way comparable to
the all natural products in the Herbarium line of Exquisite
Ginseng Extracts products.
The Ginseng saponins
are not the only active agents in Ginseng---far from it. Ginseng
roots contain numerous other substances that are believed
to influence the efficacy and quality of a root. They contain
numerous vitamins and minerals, including organic Germanium,

found nowhere else in nature. The polysaccharides found in
