body fluids
Body fluids are all the normally secreted fluids in the body,
including saliva, gastric juice, intestinal fluid, tears, sweat,
synovial fluid, etc. These are basic substances upon which live
activities rely.
There are two types of body fluids. The first type is called jin
and is distributed in the skin, muscles, body orifices and blood
vessels. These thin fluids keep the body's tissues moist. The
second type is ye, which is thick. It may be either a lubricant
or nourishing. It is distributed in the joints, organs, brain
and marrow.
Body fluids are formed from food and water after digestion,
under the influence of the Spleen, Stomach and Small Intestine.
The Lungs control the spreading of body fluids to the
respiratory tract and to the surface of the body, and in
particular the skin, where it can form sweat and keep the skin
moist. The Kidneys play a key role in the transmission,
dissemination and excretion of body fluids. Kidney essence (Yin
Jing) is partially derived from body fluids as they enter the
Kidney. Kidney Jing is both the source of energy for life
processes and for Qi activity. The Kidney is is charge of
distributing warmed body fluids throughout the body, and excess
fluids to the bladder for elimination. The whole process is
known as fluid metabolism.
