From Classical texts (Samhitas):

Which is first, the field or the knower?

The self has no beginning, and likewise, the succestion of bodies is without a beginning. Both being thus beginning less, neither can be the antecedant of the other.

(Charak Samhita, Sarir Sthana, Chapter 1, Shloka - 82)

Sharing Thoughts:

eedback from several friends about Ayurveda practice in USA

In last issue, some of our friends asked their problem how to practice or stay with Ayurveda field in USA. In response following messages were received from other friends. These are individual thoughts. You may approach them direct for more details, at your own responsibility.

(1) Dear Dr. Shah, Regarding the referral of doctor's looking for work. I am thinking to try to organize seminar(s) for practitioners/students of Ayurveda to take place here in the US. I am interested to pursue training in the pharmacy/ preparation of traditional compounding techniques. I am also thinking to conduct seminar(s) on the deeper theoretical aspects of Ayurveda. If you have any thoughts, I would be grateful. Namaste, Mike Dick

(2) Thanks Parekh Ji

(3) I suggest you link yourself to healing professionals in the Fairfield, Iowa area -- they will have links to other healers in your area -- also, you can link to Holistic Resource Network, PO Box 3181 Iowa City, IA 52244 - they will have suggestions for you I should think; look in yellow pages, and call some of the listed holistic professionals and tell them what you want to know about. Call me and I will help you. 641-472-9183 James Duke

It is internet etiquette, to use caps only when you want to shout at the recipient. Do you want to shout this? Living in Chicago means that 250 miles away, in Fairfield, Iowa is the most advanced integrated health community in the western world. An Ayurvedic college is there, and many, many people who can advise you on how to advance your career. Though you have left India, it is not necessary to stop your training and education. Do a search on the web for 'Ayurveda', 'holistic education centers'. or call 800-811-0550 or to go to www.lancasterhealth.com or call me or email me -- I will help. 641-472-9183. Namaste, James

(5) Dear Dr Prerak Shah

(6) Always good to receive your newsletter... keep up the good work. I suggest that you publish the e-mail addresses of these people who write in asking questions (about how to establish themselves in a practice here in the US) so that we can communicate directly. Legally speaking a BAMS is not worth the paper it's printed on here - because only MDs are qualified to practice internal medicine, and in some states Acupuncturists if they've acquired licensure (4 years + $20K). However, there are other ways to practice - as consultants, massage practitioners, teachers, or in partnership with sympathic MDs. Your readers can check out our website:  They may find some inspiration there. Yours in Healing, Dinesh

(7) Venkat Machiraju
Komal Swadas asked about maintaining a career in Ayurveda in America, i know that Swami sada siva tirtha has a section of practitioners on his site and gives advice as well.

Introduction To Ayurveda

We All Have Times When We Do Not Feel Well And Recognize That We Are Out Of Balance. Sometimes We Go To The Doctor Only To Be Told There Is Nothing Wrong. What Is Actually Occurring Is That This Imbalance Has Not Yet Become Recognizable As A Disease. With Ayurveda We Can Assess The Imbalance In Health.

We Are Made Up Of Body, Senses, Mind And Spirit. Ayurveda Addresses All These Aspects Of A Person And Recognizes That Each Of Us Is Unique And Responds Differently To All Aspects Of Life. Ayurveda Is Considered To Be The Oldest Healing Science And Originated In India More Than 5,000 Years Ago. Ayurveda Is A Sanskrit Word Meaning "The Science Of Life."

Ayurveda Is Not A Substitute For Western Allopathic Medicine But Is Complementary To It. Ayurveda Is Used In Conjunction With Western Medicine To Make A Person Stronger And Less Likely To Be Afflicted With Disease And/Or To Rebuild The Body After Being Treated With Drugs Or Surgery.

Ayurveda Deals Not Only With The Disease But The Diseased Person. It Is A Complete Science Of Life And Not Merely A Treatise On Some Of The Medicines Or Treatment Of The Diseases. Ayurveda Has Three Principles As Its Basic Premise. They Are As Follows:

1. To Preserve Health

2. To Promote The Health Of The Healthy Person

3. To Prevent And Cure The Disease Of The Ill Person.

The Indian System Of Medicine Is Composed Of Two Words, Ayu And Veda. Ayu Means "Life" And Veda Means "Science" The Word Ayu (Life) Encompasses Body (Sarira), Senses (Indriya), Mind (Satva) And Spirit (Atma).Ayurveda Is The Most Ancient Form Of Medicine In The World And The Forerunner Of All Other Great Systems Of Medicine. It Is A Comprehensive System Of Health Care Derived From The Vedas Which Are One Of The Most Ancient Repositories Of Knowledge.

Ayurveda Places Great Emphasis On Prevention And Encourages Maintaining Health By A Balance Of Body, Mind And Consciousness According To Ones Own Individual Constitution. It Stresses The Need To Make Lifestyle Changes To Bring About And Keep This Balance. The Cause Of Disease In Ayurveda Is Viewed As The Lack Of Proper Cellular Function Because Of An Excess Or Deficiency Of Vata, Pitta Or Kapha And/Or The Presence Of Toxins.

According To Ayurveda, Each Person Has A Particular Pattern Of Energy, Which Is His Or Her Constitution (Biotype-Dosha). This Constitution Is Determined At Conception By A Number Of Factors And Is The Same Throughout Ones Life. Many Factors, Both Internal And External, Can Disturb The Balance And Are Reflected As A Change In Ones Constitution From The Balanced State To An Unbalanced State. Ayurveda Helps To Re-Establish Ones Original Constitution (Biotype-Dosha).

In Ayurvedic Philosophy, Everything In The Universe Is Composed Of Five Elements - The Pancha Mahabuthas. The Five Are Space (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Tejas), Water (Ap/Jala) And Earth (Prithvi). These Combine Into Three Doshas (Vata, Pitta And Kapha) Or Bioenergetic Forces That Govern Our Health And Physical-Mental Constitution. Ayurveda Teaches Us To Balance These Energies In Order To Achieve Optimum Health And Well-Being In Order To Preserve Life.

Vatas Structure Is Space (Akash) And Air (Vayu) And Its Function Is Rajasic In Nature. It Is The Energy Of Movement - Catabolic, Activating And Dynamic. It Governs Breathing, Muscle And Tissue Movement, Pulsation Of The Heart, And All Movements At Cellular Level

Pittas Structure Is Fire (Tejas) And Water (Jala) And Its Function Is Satwic In Nature. It Is The Energy Of Metabolism, Balancing And Transformative. It Governs Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, Nutrition, Metabolism And Body Temperature.

Kaphas Structure Is Water (Ap/Jala) And Earth (Prithvi) And Its Function Is Tamasic. It Is The Energy Of Structure - Anabolic, Conserving And Stabilizing. Bones, Muscles, Tendons--And Provides The "Glue" That Holds The Cells Together. Kapha Supplies The Water For All Bodily Parts And Systems. It Lubricates Joints, Moisturizes The Skin, And Maintains Immunity.
