Question for Dr Shah:
I urinate some times frequently And I have little burning sensation
almost continuously, it continues for three or four days and then
disappears by itself. But it reappears also after few days. Please
help me and tell me where can I buy this natural medicines in Houston.
Thanks for your mail. I would like to share my
views for your problem.
1. If you drink less water, this may be one of the cause for burning
micturition (your complain), please try to increase your water / liquid
intake.
2. Instead of medicines, I would suggest you some natural diuretics and
antacids like barley water or coconut water. If you can have 1 - 2 glass of
coconut water / boiled and filtered barley water, you will feel comfortable.
Try this natural thing for 8 - 10 days and let me know, if problem
persistence.
3. Avoid spicy, hot, deep fried and oily foods.
4. Still if you wish to have medicine, here are few names. Select any one or
two of them.
- Chandraprabha Tablet - 2 tablets 2 times a day after meals.
- Gokshura Powder - 5 grams 2 times a day after meals.
- Punarnava Powder - 5 grams 2 times a day after meals.
- Punarnavadi Kwath - 10 ml. 2 times a day after meals.
- Tablet Bangshil - 2 tablets 2 times a day after meals.
Do reply me.

Question for Dr Shah:
I am 76 yrs old but physically still healthy. I had problem of constipation say
since 30 or more years, I did take many types of ayurvedic medicines,
and ultimately I am now daily
addict of enima which is nothing but fresh tap water only which I take by way
of a blower. It clear my stomach very well and since I have started this method
I feel more energetic but doctors deny me to go addict to this method.
I live in Daressalaam (Tanzania) but am here in India since last two months. Since I came here my bowel system is improved and since last 15 days
I do not take enema. But I think that this due to climatic change and I am much
afraid that as soon as I will be back to Tanzania , I might suffer with the same
problem. For last 6 weeks or more I do take some types of ayurvedic
capsules prescribed. Can you suggest me any medicine which may help me when I
go back to dar es salaam?
Thanks
Narottam Asher.
Dear Narottambhai,
Thanks for your e-mail and interest in Ayurveda. I go through your complains and found that there are certain points that I
should discuss it with you.
1. You are now 76. Normally at this age digestion becomes low and constipation is normal complain here in India.
2. But you say that you are having this problem since last 30 years. Now that means you have to check your daily routine and diet habits. Something
must be there. Like if you are:
- eating more curd or yogurt
- working late night
- having more tense and worry in nature
- gulping foods not chewing it properly or many others
3. What you are doing right now (I mean enema), is not a proper treatment. Ayurveda does not
recommend this type of enema. Even it is clearly
mentioned in the texts that such type of enema may cause you more problems, if it is
used for longer period.
4. For your present problem, I would like to suggest you few things:
- Ask your Ayurveda Physician to advise you proper eating style, proper
food and life style
- Avoid any form of enema, unless you learn proper enema (Basti) of
Ayurveda. Ayurvedic Basti contains oily substances in enema, not only water, and it helps to nutritiate intestines. Oil helps to control VATA
and recharge the functions of the intestines. Basti is the proper treatment and
you need not to do it daily. Once you will go for 15 days course, the effects will be for longer period, and the
repetition of the basti will be
after long period.
- For medicines , I would prefer you to take Triphala Powder - 1 to 2
teaspoon full at bed time with lukewarm water.
- also 1 glass lukewarm milk with 10 gram ghee at bed time will also help
you.
Please feel free to discuss any matter with me.
Best wishes,
Dr. Prerak Shah
Question for Dr. Shah:
High Blood pressure since last year. Taking Stamlo Beta betablocker+calcium
Blocker). Lipid profile and other tests are normal. Doing regular exercises
and weight is well within limits. Kindly advice some alternate medicines so
that I can get rid of this medicine which I am taking daily. Also write me
your address for personal consultation.
Thanks for your mail and interest in Ayurveda.
As we know High Blood pressure is the more Psycho-somatic disorder. I think
today's life-style and stress are the major factors who create this type of
complains more. In early days, when life was not so fast and stressful,
Psycho-somatic disorders were not much common. I think you will agree with
me.
For stress management Yoga is the perfect solution.
In my practice, I recommend The rules of Hygiene, which is prescribed by
Ayurveda as "Swasth-vrutta". Which means Din-charya, Ratri-charya
and
Rutu -charya. I would like to suggest you to read any Ayurveda book
containing the lessons Din-charya, Ratri-charya and Rutu -charya or
"Swasth-vrutta".
For medications , I will suggest you to start with Tab. Sepina (Himalaya Drug
Co. ) - 2 tablets two times a day.
Hope to have continue communication.

Question for Dr. Shah:
I am giving Bramhi and Shankhapushpi powders (Urjita Jain products) with
milk and sugar to my family daily at night. Recently I heard that these
should be given with Ghee. I am confused now. Can you please advice me on
how should I give Bramhi and Shankhapushpi?
Also , I had an excellent memory but of late I feel my memory is not as
good I also feel confused on simple issues. Is this the beginning of
Alzheimers? Can Bramhi prevent Alzheimers and/or cure my memory loss?
1. You can give Brahmi and Shatavari both in milk
as well as with ghee. Do
not get confused. Both are effective ways. Actually PITTA person should be
given with ghee. But in your case your children needs more palatable taste
as well milk will provide more nutritional values, so I would suggest you to
continue with milk. If your children are having any problems, then let me
know. We will decide accordingly.
2. For your case - right now it does not seems that you are having
Alzheimers.
You can also take Brahmi as a brain tonic. There is one readymade formula
available in the market called , 'Brahmivita Granules' , which all of you
will like to have. Take it with milk everyday, it has chocolate flavour
too.
Please inform me after a month, about the progress.
Keep in touch.

classical music. She had the tonsils problem for quite some time (2-3)

Dear Dr. Shah:
What is the underlying cause and the Ayurvedic cure for hypothyroidism? Thank You!
Molly Gentry
Dear Molly,
Received your mail. Thanks for interest in Ayurveda. I would like to know your present symptoms and complaints. As Ayurveda
does not consider Hypothyroidism as modern medicine do. There is separate way
of thinking in both medical science. Also provide me your detailed history, so
that I can diagnose your disease in Ayurvedic term and may be able to advise
properly. Once again thanks for your mail.
Regards and best wishes,

Dear Dr. Shah:
Where can I find
the herb Shatari? Can it be obtained here in the US?
Dear friend Karlene
M. Jordan,
Do you mean "
Shatavari "? It is a herb from Liliaceae family and called as Asparagus
racemosus wild. in latin, and english Asparagus. Normally you will find
Asparagus in your local market, but it is different from Indian Asparagus.
For medicinal use, we prefer to have Indian Asparagus. Now in days , some
herbal co.s are importing Indian Asparagus ( Shatavari ) from India and
selling in the states.
I request you to
find out such producer, it is not very difficult. Shatavari is a best tonic
and Pitta pacifying herb.
Keep in touch.
With love and regards,
Dr. Prerak Shah

I am a senior in
college doing a research study with terminally ill Hospice patients. I am
looking for ways to decrease chronic pain, depression, and
anxiety associated with terminal illness. I would like to use magnetic
therapy
as one of the therapies in my research and I was wondering if you could
give me some advice on how to start. I would greatly appreciate any help you
could
offer me!
Thanks.
T.Kolman
Dear friend Kolman,
Thanks for your mail.
As I am an Ayurveda
qualified practitioner, I know very little bit about Magnet therapy. But
through Ayurveda and Yoga, you can treat the symptoms you want; like,
chronic pain, depression, and
anxiety. With
meditation you will find good responses in depression, and anxiety. It is
possible to discuss for other Ayurvedic views, if you are interested.
Thanks for your
mail and interest in Ayurveda.
With love and regards,
Dr. Prerak Shah
Dear Dr. Shah
My Husband and mother both have
diagnosed with depression, what I am wondering what type of herbal treatment I can
recommend to them or herbs I can cook with to help them out. I would also like some books
to refer to.
thank you
Joyce
Dear Joyce,
Thanks for your mail.
Depression is a feeling
of intense sadness. It is the most common psychiatric disorder and yet it's causes are not
fully understood. But few we may consider such as;
- heredity, side effects
of certain medicines, an introverted personality, emotionally upsetting events etc.
Women are twice as likely
as men to experience depression, though the reasons aren't entirely clear.
Depression may also occur
with , or be caused by, a number of physical diseases or disorders, like;
- Infections (e.g. AIDS,
tuberculosis etc.) - Hormonal disorders (e.g. low and high levels of thyroid hormone etc.)
- Connective tissue diseases (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis etc. ) - Neurological disorders
(e.g. stroke, brain tumor etc.) - Nutritional disorders (e.g. pellagra etc.) - Cancers
etc.
Treatments:
1. First of all, rule out
the exact cause of Depression in your relatives and in Ayurvedic terms " Nidanam
parivarjanam" is the treatment , means to avoid the cause of the disease is the best
treatment.
2. Ayurveda prescribes
"Swasth-vritta" the rules for the Life. Which includes rules for the day time /
night and for different seasons, which keeps you away from such mental anxiety and
depression. So search the Ayurvedic book containing chapter of "Swasth-vritta".
3. Yoga and Pranayam has
certain role to benefit in this conditions.
4. For Ayurvedic
medicines - take Brahmi (Centella asiatica Linn.) or Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis
evovulus alsinoids Linn.) daily.
5. Brahmivita Granuals -
5 grams twice daily with milk.
6. Tab. Mentat (Ayurvedic
Concepts Co.) - 2 tablets two times a day, with milk.
Please inform your
response after a month. Best wishes for you and your family members.
Dr. Shah:
What type of therapy do
you recommend for impotence and weak erections?
JOHN
Dear John,
Thanks for your mail. I
am very sorry for delay in reply due to my absence in the clinic. Last week I was invited
as chair to one scientific workshop in National seminar on "Rajyoga and Holistic
approach in Ayurveda", organized by Brahmakumari's organization at Mt. Abu, India.
This aspect of Ayurveda deals with your problem.
Impotency is a
psycho-somatic disorder. It usually results from vascular impairment, neurological
disorders, drugs, abnormalities of the penis, or psychological problems that interfere
with sexual arousal. Physical causes are more common in older men; psychological problems
are more common in younger men.*
Because the penis needs
adequate blood flow to become erect, blood vessel disorder such as atherosclerosis can
cause impotence. Impotence can also result from a blood clot or from vascular surgery that
impairs arterial blood flow to the penis.*
Damage to the nerves
leading to and from the penis also can produce impotence. Such damage may result from many
causes, including injury, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, stroke and drugs.*
Occasionally, impotence
results from hormonal disturbances. For example- low levels of testosterone.*
Psychological factors,
such as depression and performance anxiety can lead to impotence, as can sexual guilt,
fear of intimacy, and ambivalence about sexual orientation.*
Psychological causes of
sexual dysfunction:
- anger toward a partner
- depression - fear of losing control, of dependence on another person, or of pregnancy -
guilt - anxiety - ignorance or inhibitions about sexual behavior - previous traumatic
sexual experiences (for example, rape, incest or sexual abuse, or sexual failure) -
performance anxiety - feeling like a spectator rather than a participant - discord or
boredom with a partner. **

of medical information, Home edition, 1997, page - 1065.
** Ref. The Merck Manual
of medical information, Home edition, 1997, page - 422.
Dear John you can see
that lots of causes or co-problems are there to identify first of all. You need to
evaluate your problems in depth with the Doctor and then only, doctor can suggest you few
medicines, if required.
Ayurveda is not in favour
of symptomatical treatments. We also need long history as above, before prescribing any
medicine. So I recommend you not to opt for short-cuts, don't go for Ayurvedic medicines
from advertisements etc. Share your detailed problem with qualified doctor and then you
will get the appropriate treatment. Till then try to learn Yoga, if you have psychological
problems.
Do write me again.
With best wishes for your
health.

Dr. Shah:
I am a 41 year old PK
suffering from tinnitus. Is yogaraj guggulu appropriate for this condition? I am taking
one pill twice a day after meals, approximately 400-500 mg. I've had this condition for a
year and a half. It began to arrive without warning or exposure to loud noise. I've
noticed that the quality of my sleep influences my tinnitus. If my sleep is restful and my
dreams are calm, I have no or very little tinnitus upon waking. If my sleep is fitful or
my dreams are disturbing, I will wake with tinnitus and carry it all day long. The only
therapy that has helped me so far is cranial sacral therapy (stillpoint therapy). I would
like your opinion. Thank you.
Stephen
Dear Friend,
* The definition of
Tinitus is clearly mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts, like; Charak Samhita : Chikitsa
Sthana, chapter 26, Shlokas - 127,128.
Diseases of the
Ear:
127-128. Tinnitus (
noises in the ear), excessive pain, drying of the ear wax, thin discharge and deafness occur
in condition due to Vata. Swelling, redness, bursting, burning, yellow and putrid
discharge occur in condition due to pitta. Dys-acousma, itching, rigid swelling, white and
sticky discharge and slight pain occur in the condition caused by Kapha. In condition of
tridiscordance, there will be all the signs and symptoms and the discharge excessively
morbid and containing many colors. Thus has been described "The pathology of Ear
diseases".
* For the treatment of
the same, you would like to know - Ayurvedic approach, such as Charak Samhita : Chikitsa
Sthana, chapter 26, Shlokas - 221 to 230. 221. In ear-ache, the Vata curative treatment,
as in the case of coryza is beneficial as also applications, ear drops and nasal
medications. When there are suppuration and discharge, procedures as in the case of a
wound, and diet suitable to the particular morbid humor and ear-drops of oil should be
applied.
Now, particularly
for your problem, It is essential to know the detailed symptoms such as; excessive
pain, drying of the ear wax, thin discharge or Swelling, redness, bursting, burning,
yellow and putrid discharge etc. My impression of your complain is more Vataj. According
to that I am suggesting you few medicines:
1. You may take Kaishor
Guggulu or Trifla Guggulu 2 tablets three times a day. Tablets should be break into
pieces. Because the binder (Guggulu) sometimes doesn't dissolves inside.
2. For ear drops; you may
have 3-4 drops of lukewarm Apamargkshar Tail (Oil) or Balbilvadi Tail, twice a day.
3. Dasamoola Kwath - 10
ml twice a day, may help you more.
4. Garlic 5 grams + 10
grams Ghee, in the morning may help you.
This is the line of
treatment, at present. Please inform me about the progress after 30 days.
Please feel free to
contact me for any matter.
With best wishes for your
health.
Dr. Prerak Shah
Dear Dr. Shah,
I have read much about Ayurveda...and I have
actually tried various recommendations he suggests to attune the mind and body. But that
was awhile ago, and I guess I forgot about Ayurveda for some time, this until I received
an e-mail today from
you which seemed to help remind me to get back on track again...thanks for keeping me on
your list and please keep me posted as you share your techniques with
others.
Dave
Dear Dr Shah:
How best to overcome the effects of long-term phenobarbital usage on my 7 year old
grandson. my research assures me that it causes an inability to use calcium by making
vitamin d an unusable metabolite. He suffers from full body muscle spasms caused by being
on this drug since he was 2 weeks old.
The doctors refuse to admit what research makes clear and call these terrible cramps
seizures. Each year his dose is increased and the spasms become worse not better. Though
he is not paralyzed he lacks the muscle tone and bone strength to walk at this time.
Please suggest help. I cannot stop the use of the drug but cannot refuse him some relief. I
know he is stronger than any drug he is very bright and yet the drug causes constriction
of the larynx (laryngl stridor) and he has been unable to speak words though he has a very
strong voice. Any suggestions would be a blessing. Fighting against the denial of
mainstream physicians has been heartbreaking.
Thank you for your caring and time.
Linda
Dear Linda,
Received your mail. I go through the history of your grandson. Few points are really to
discuss:
1. As you say, the effects of phenobarbitol are very known in the world. Some side-effects
like sedation, nystagmus, ataxia, irritability, hyperactivity in children-some times,
confusion - in elderly, morbilliform rash, exfoliative dermatitis, hypoprothrombinemia,
megaloblastic anemia, osteomalacia are commonly known. (Ref.: page 456-457, chapter 20,
Goodman and Gilman's - The Pharmacological basis of Therapeutics, sixth edition)
2. I had a long meeting with my team of doctors and scientists friends. We discussed this
at a length. You are rightly said that you can not stop the use of the drug, but we all
are agree that the drug should be tapered and discontinue later on.
3. Meanwhile here are few suggestions that you would like to think on and follow.
first of all the child should be given physical exercise (physiotherapy) for his muscle
tone and for the strength to function normally by the limbs.
-- while tapering down the doses of phenobarbitol, you can start some ayurvedic herbs like
- Brahmi (bacopa moniera or hydrocotyle asiatica, both varieties are useful) powder 500
mg, Ashwagandha (with amnia somnifera) powder 500 mg, Sarpagandha (serpentina rouwolfolia)
powder 500 mg and Sunthi (zingiber officinale) powder 500 mg - total 2 grams powder three
times a day. If you can have fresh juice of leaves of the above herbs - it would be
better - give each half teaspoon three times a day.
-- Take 10 grams Methika (fenugreek) + add. 250 ml water and keep it overnight. In the
morning boil the mixture until 33 % remains. Filter it and remove sticky part from it.
Give the filtered part to the child in the morning.
4. Normally in India, I prefer one multi-compound formulation for such problems. It is as
under; Brahmi (centella asiatica), Shatavari (asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (withania
somnifera), Yastimadhu (glycyrrhiza glabra), Guduchi (tinospora cordifolia), Gokshur
(tribulus terresteis), Amlak (emblica officinalis), Sunth (gingiber officinale), Haridra
(curcuma longa), Shankhpushpi convolvulus pluricaulis), Punarnava (boerhaavia diffusa),
Arjun (terminalia arjuna) - all in equal parts. Dose - 5 grams three times a day.
5. Please inform me about his progress after a month. If you feel some improvement you can
taper the dose of phenobarbitol, with the consultation of your physician. Please feel free
to contact me any time.
Best wishes from all of us.
Dr. Prerak Shah
