INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE - By the Dalai Lama

  • Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  • When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
  • Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  • Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
  • When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  • Spend some time alone every day.
  • Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  • Live a good, honorable life.
  • A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
  • In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
  • Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
  • Be gentle with the earth.
  • Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

The Eight Censured Types of Persons

In respect of their bodily conditions, eight kinds of persons are found censurable.

They are; the very tall and the very short, the very hairy and the hairless, the very dark and the very fair, the very corpulent and the very emaciated.

(Charak Samhita, Sutra Sthana, Chapter 21, Shloka – 3)

The Physician’s Conduct

Friendship towards all, compassion for the ailing, devotion to curable patients, and sense of resignation towards the dying constitute the four-fold nature of the physician’s profession.

FRIENDS CORNER:

Have been interested in Ayurveda about a year. Very happy and very pleased with the education it provides. Would like to know if there are any Ayurvedic meetings in Philadelphia, Pa. Would like to read about medical links to the Vedas.

Please send materials to gobzhad@yahoo.com

You may be interested in having a look at a recent paper published in the USA on the Anti-diabetic effects of dietary supplement "Pancreas Tonic". This paper is published in the Journal of the National Medical Association. It is a combination of herbal products, including Karela, that are well known in India for centuries as hypoglycemic agents.

You can obtain a copy of that paper at the web site www.pancreastonic.com and click on the Breakthrough Research.

Now I see several doctors in the USA talking about Ayurveda and herbal medicines. A couple of decades ago, it was almost a stigma among the medical community here to talk such things.

I am a medical doctor trained in India. I left clinical practice to pursue a full-time research on kidney physiology and patho-physiology. Currently I do a lot of front line studies to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of water transport in kidney in health and disease. I will be interested in knowing the existence of any Ayurvedic formulations that are used as diuretics or to treat water balance disorders. I would like to know more about such medicines or herbal preparations. Based on the availability of the information, I can think of some research projects to evaluate those preparations in a scientific way. Please let me know of any such preparations.

With best regards and Namaste.

ARTICLE

The basis of Vatham, Pitham and Kapam.

The fundamental principles of Siddha and Ayurveda are not correctly understood by the scientists and the people of other systems of medicine. Every system of medicine is having the power of reasoning, as they are having their own fundamental principles. These fundamental principles may seem to be abstract in nature, but they are scientific. The Siddha and Ayurveda system are scientific, since they give good results in experiments and also to patients. One cannot expect everything to be explained in terms of so called modern science. The most commonly used terms in Ayurveda and Siddha are : Vatham, Pittam and Kapam. These terms have not been fully understood, scientifically, because of their abstract nature. Nadi (Pulse) is one of the eight mehtods of diagnosis. "Nadi" means, the reading of pulse.

What is a pulse?

Pulse is the reflection of the soul, about the condition of the body. The soul is the sole authority for the proper maintanance of the body. If the soul ceases to function in the body, there will no action in the body. Hence it is proven fact, that without the soul, there will be no growth, no biochemical changes etc. According to Siddha - Vatham, pitham and kapam are the three powers attributed to the soul by the Almighty. The power or the principle vatham has the power of creation. Pittam or the heat is the protecting force of the body. Kapam is not phlegm. It is principle and power of the soul, which helps in excreting unwanted materials from the body.

The ratio of Vatham, Pitam and Kapam are 1:1/2:1/4. If the ratio is disturbed, it is sure that the body is heading for ailment. If Vatham, Pitham and Kapam are in the natural ratio, the natural immunity of the patient is intact. In that condition, no organism can cause, any disease at all.

That is why, Yogis and Siddhars, preferred Yoga practise, which strengthens the soul as well as the physical body, which leads to longer and healthier life.
