INTRODUCTION TO AYURVEDA

Eight Factors Determining Utility of Food

Prakriti (Nature of the Food Article)

The prakriti here means whether the food (diet) is heavy/light. For example the meat of the boar is heavy while that of deer is light. The masa (Phaselous radiatus Linn.) is heavy while mudga (Phaselous mungo Linn.) is light.

Karana (Method of Processing)

It means how the food is prepared i.e. by boiling, churning, heating, frying/baking, diluting with other herbs or flavouring. Sometimes the processing attributes to changes in food. For example rice when taken boiled and the water filtered out become lighter. Addition of sweet smelling drugs like Kevada to water shows transformation by flavouring. Curd by nature aggravates the odema but when churned it alleviates oedema.

Samyoga (Combination of Substances)

It is combining two or more substances. Neither honey alone nor ghee alone can cause any ill effect. But if both taken in equal quantity together can cause severe illness.

Rashi (Quantity of the Substance)

It means proper or improper dose of the food. That is whether it is to be taken as a whole (sarvagraha) or seperately (quantity of each) (parigraha).

Desa (Habitat)

The place where the herbs are grown attribute to their properties. For example herbs grown in  Himalayas are effacious whereas those grown in deserts are light.

Kala (Time)

It stands for both time in form of day and night and health and age of an individual.

Upayogasamstha (Dietetic Rules)

These are rules to be followed while taking food. They are most important for proper digestiion of food. One should not speak or laugh while taking food; one should not eat hurriedly or very slowly. One should eat when previous food has been digested. According to Ayurveda these rules are:

  • Food should be warm. When taken warm it is delicious and it provokes the enzymes for digestion promoting quick digestion.

  • One should take unctuous food which provokes subdued power of digestion.

  • Food should be taken in proper quantity. When taken in proper quantity it is digested easily.

  • One should always take food when previous meal is digested. Otherwise the previously undigested food can cause imbalance of the doshas .

  • Food having no contraindicatory potencies should be taken.

  • One should eat food too hurriedly. It might enter into wrong passage.

  • One should not laugh or talk while eating.

  • One should take food with due regard to his ownself.

Upayokrit (Habit of the Individual)

Upayokrit is he who takes the food keeping in his mind all the above points before eating.

One should try to understand these factors and according to his prakriti, age and health conditions should eat food.

oil, which is cosidered as the best.  thanking you,

Dear Friend,

Here is comparison for both oils;

Coconut Oil vs Til oil
1. Useful in Vata-pitta disease vs Vata diseases
2. Helpful to healing the wound vs cleans and heals the wound
3. Having Shit Virya, Madhur vipak vs Ushna virya, Madhur vipak
4.  --------  Medhya (Brain tonic)
5. --------- Yogvahi (when it is mixed with other herbs, it adds the qualities of other herbs without loosing its own qualities.) This is the main quality, which makes til oil as the best for massage.
