Introduction of Ayurveda (New Series)

Prakriti

The word Prakriti means "nature" or natural form of the build and constitution of the human body. Pra means beginning and kriti means `to form¹. Life begins with the fusion of male gamete (shukra) and female gamete (shonita). When the male gamete and female gamete fuse the zygote carries the constitution (Prakriti) of the parents. At the time of fusion, the dominant Prakriti or the dosha predominant forms the characteristic constitution or prakriti of the individual.

Doshaj Prakriti

Based on the three saririka dosas (bodily dosas) there are three prakritis:

  • Vataj Prakriti
  • Pittaj Prakriti
  • Kaphaj Prakriti
Vataj Prakriti

Vataj individual have thin, lean and underdeveloped body structure. The dryness is manifested in hair, skin, nails and lips. Due to roughness and lightness the sleep is light and less. Due to the chal guna (mobile) the individual has a lot of early initiative in work but due to the khar guna (dryness quality) he gets tired because of loss of strength. Their memory is short but they are able to grasp quickly. The natural desires and craving for food and environment are opposite to the qualities of Vata. In the dreams such individuals see themselves flying, running and scared. They have low voice but are talkative. They are quick in thinking but indecisive. Such individuals are anxious and fearful. Their strength is less and has short life span.

Pittaj Prakriti

Pittaj individuals are thin and average built. The skin is glowing and more prone to freckles or moles. They have very good digestion and appetite. The sleep is irregular and in dreams they see fighting, violence, glowing objects and encounters with fire. They possess soft and scanty hair. Due to tikshana guna (sharpness) they have sharp memory and are intelligent in thinking. They are unable to bear even minimum heat. Such individuals get easily provoked and get very soon angry. They are argumentive. Their strength is medium and life span is medium.

Kaphaj Prakriti

Kaphaj individuals have well-built and steady body. Due to the snighda guna (unctuousness) Kaphaj individuals possess unctuous and oily skin and hair. The kaphaj individuals are slow in their activities but they have strong perseverance and are emotionally very mild. They posses steady and slow body movements. The seet guna (coldness) results in poor appetite and digestion. They have deep and slow voice and are silent and calm. In their dreams they visit the places having water, romantic places and usually see aquatic birds. Their sleep is deep. Their grasping power is slow but once if they learn, they regain it for longer time. Such individuals have mild emotions and are dull, steady in every aspect of life. They have maximum strength and their life span is long.

Dwandaj Prakriti

Such individuals possess the qualities of two prakritis. They can be: vataj-pittaj, pittaj-kaphaj or vattaj-kaphaj.

Problem of the month: (through e-mail counselling)

Question :

Sent: Tuesday, February 05, 2002 9:55 PM

Subject: height increase

please can you tell me if you have any products for growing taller ?
Answer :

Dear Friend,

After the age of 21 it is very hard to increase the height, height is a hereditary factor. What is your age ? I should also know heights of you and your parents and grand father / mother's.

Some exercises like swimming, cycling, and pull-ups will give extra boost to your efforts. But for medicines I am not sure. Some times medicines, even Ayurvedic - like Ashwagandha powder or Shatavari powder - which are used to gain height and weight, may increase your weight alone. So I would not recommend you any medicine, only go for proper exercise.

In future, just try to maintain your weight. that will help you to look smart and handsome

Dr. Prerak Shah

I am getting number of e-mail like this. As you all know that, for any medical guidance your doctor needs far more details than this. One should ask question with proper information like name, age, sex, occupation, country, present complains, past history and medications etc. Only with a few words of disease, I can not help such friends, though I wish.

Withanolides - much talked natural product

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a reputed drug of Ayurveda. It finds application in Ayurvedic formulation for impotency and arthritis. Withania somnifera is an erect evergreen shrub that grows to about 1.5 meters in height in drier regions of India. It has been used for as sedative, diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties agent Modern studies have thrown light on immunomodulatory and anti carcinogenic activity of the plant and it has been rightly called as 'Indian ginseng'.

Withania somnifera contains alkaloids and a special group of compounds called withanolides, which are considered to be the active principles of the drug. Chemically, withanolides are a group of naturally occurring oxygenated ergostane type steroids having lactone in side chain and 2-en-1-one system in ring A. The withanolides are present in the whole of the plant, but maximum presence have been recorded from the leaves. Withaferin-A is the important withanolide isolated so far.

Withaferin- A has shown potent tumor-inhibiting activity in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, Sarcoma 180, Sarcoma Black (SBL), and E 0771 mammary adenocarcinoma in animal models. Besides it, Withaferin-A has significant anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory activities. Other withanolides have demonstrated immuno-modulator, cardio-vascular and antifungal activity. 3-B-hydroxy, 2-3 dihydrowithanolide has a significant protective effect in rats against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatic damage.

The standardization of Withania somnifera is based on withanolide content and the drug should contain 1.5% w/w of withanolide. Withanolides are present in other members of Solaneace like Physalis minima, Nicandra physaloides, Physalis philadelphica, Solanum torvum, Datura innoxia and Datura metel L.The withanolides present in other plant include Withametelin, withacoagin, coagulin, and withasomidienone, 3-dihydro-3-methoxywithaphysacarpin (1), and two known compounds, withaphysacarpin, 24,25-dihydrowithanolide D, Withanicandrin, Withaphysalin- A and Withaphysalin -B.
