Problem of the month: (through e-mail counseling)

Question : What is the recommended procedure for Gandush (mouth rinse or cleansing)? How long should the oil be kept in the mouth? Is there anything to add to the oil? I understand medicinal camphor is recommended sometimes. Another suggestion was using a decoction of triphala. How is this prepared?

Answer :
Dear Friend,

Nice to have e-mail from an Ayurveda friend. here are my suggestions;

1. Gandush are gargle with liquid full of mouth, which can not be moved inside the oral cavity. One which you can move inside the mouth is called 'Kawal'.

2. You can keep it until you can hold. In the beginning it maybe for only for seconds, by the practice the time may be extended for a minute or two.

3. I usually suggest to add pinch of rock salt in little warm sesame oil. Any medicated oil (accordingto dosha) can be used for Gandush. Some times decoctions, fresh jiuces, milk, ghee also can be used for Gandush.
4. triphala preparation for Gandush :(my practical method) Take Triphala powder 50 gr. + 400 ml water - boiled upto 200 ml, filter it and use it for Gandush. You may add curcuma - turmeric or salt according to your need.

Best wishes,

Prerak

Know common herbs: Guggulu & Vasa

Know some common herbs:

Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) :

This is best Vata - Kapha pacifying herb. It is one of the main herb to treat obesity or weight reduction, arthritis - rheumatism, sciatica, paralysis - all Vata diseases. The gum of the tree is used for the treatment. It is also a good binder in tablet form. Good results are also noted for high cholesterol levels. It is a good rasayana too.  May be used for anemia and to improve blood quality. Useful in worms, piles, liver disorders, stones etc. Most common formulations available are; Yograj Guggulu, Triphala guggulu, Kaishor guggulu, Kanchanar guggulu, Simhnad guggulu - all tablet form. Kindly note that while taking guggulu tablets, one should avoid salt, sour and hot taste, wine and heat, anger etc.  Always crush the tablets in to pieces before taking it for better absorption in the body.

Vasa (Adhatoda vasika) :

It is good for Kapha and Pitta dosha. It is known bronco-dilator, suppressant of cough. Useful in asthma, bronchitis, cough and cold of any etiology. Generally fresh juice of leaves are more used in India. Juice of flowers are used in Urinary tract disorders. Text books suggests it is useful in Rakta-pitta, Bleeding piles, excess mentruation etc.

Practically, my experience - Fresh juice of Vasa is useful in bleeding of any origin in the body - Vd. Prerak Shah

Interesting to know: Anupana

Interesting to know :

Anupana (After meal liquid intake)

An ideal anupana is that which is not incompatible with the food taken in virtue of its properties. Anupana helps in the proper movement of food inside the body, liquification of the food for the easy digestion. But if one is over hydrated (or suffering from polyuria) too much drinking of liquids should be avoided.

In summers butter-milk can be used as anupana. Cold water is ideal after meals containing yoghurt/curd. Warm water can be taken after consuming starchy/fermented food . Honey water is good to make stout persons lean. Sura (fermented drinks) is good to make lean persons stout. Milk is best suited for those who have become weak due to some disease or therapy, fasting or due to excessive physical activities. It is even reccomended for emaciated, aged and children.

Stomach Capacity

According to Ayurveda, one should always keep in mind the capacity of stomach before taking food.

Ayurveda describes stomach capacity into three parts-One part that should be filled with solid food.

v      One should not feel heaviness over chest.

v      No heaviness should be felt in abdomen .

v      Food taken in the morning should be digested by the evening and food taken during evening should be digested by the next morning.

v      There should be promotion of easiness and strength to the body.

Symptoms of  Intake of Food in Inadequate Auantity

Defecient Intake of Food

v      Feeling of uneasiness in doing all activities.

v      Impairment of the strength.
