Introduction of Ayurveda (New Series) Tridoshas and Panchmahabhootas Doshas are the basic elements of the body. The doshas determine the state of health of our body and mind. The doshas are of two types: saririka doshas (i.e. related to body) and mansika doshas (i.e. related to mind). The saririka doshas are vata, pitta and kapha and the mansika doshas are rajas and tamas. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are collectively known as Tridoshas (The three doshas). Tridosha theory is the foundation of Ayurveda. If we study the Vedas, they depict that these are derived from vayu (air), surya (sun) and chandrma (moon) devata .The properties of these doshas are the evidence of this theory. These doshas perform all the functions in our body. Each of dosha has specific quality and function in the body. The balanced or imbalanced state of doshas determines the health of an individual. In other words they can be considered as Ayurvedic diagnostics for determning the condition of body. Their balanced/normal and imbalanced/abnormal conditions lead to healthy and unhealthy conditions of the body. While in normal condition, they maintain and support the body. In abnormal conditions they either increase (vridhi) or decrease (kshya) leading to diseases. When doshas are imbalanced, they vitiate the place of their dwellings. Due to this property of vitiation, they are called doshas. Doshas are found all over the body but they are found predominantly in places (According to Ashtang Hridyam) Kapha is present above the heart.Pitta is present between the heart and umbilicus.Vata is present below the umbilicus. Ayurveda states that all creation even humans are made of five basic elements called panch mahabhutas. These are the building blocks of the elements. These are Prithvi (earth)Jala (water)Agni (fire)Vayu (air)Akaash (ether) The doshas are also made of the five basic elements. The relation between them is as follows: Vata: Akaash (Ether)+ Vayu (Air)Pitta: Agni (Fire)+ Jaal (Water)Kapha: Prithvi (Earth)+ Jaal (Water) Next month: Properties and functions of Doshas Vaidya Swaran

Tips on Health Care The indefatigable efforts of medical and para-medical researchers have undoubtedly revolutionised the process of evolution in designing newer dosage forms in last 50 years or so. Complemented by the scientific advances in the field physics, chemistry, engineering and bio-technology, today we can boast of having seen the interiors of an atom and studied the functions of quarks and ducons. The pace is so fast that today’s achievement becomes obsolete tomorrow. The tragedy of the materialistic growth is that while studying the human physiology too, we evaluate everything in isolation and then attempt to find, or establish the link between visible and distinguishable often failing to look into the role of certain other factors which could be indistinct yet, capable of influencing our body physiology – positively or negatively. Here comes the role of a holistic approach. While defining health itself, Ayurvedic scholars stipulate that besides the proper functioning of doshas (vital catalytic forces); dhatus (tissue-humoral components); agnis (biochemical converters) and malas (waste products), it is essential that the mana (mind) is balanced; aatma (soul) is contented and the indriyas (sensory and motor organs) are active - for a person to be labelled as Swastha (healthy). The diseases are reported to be due to : i)abuse of health by means of unsuitable diet and bad conduct, ii) careless attitude by voluntary indulgence into activities detrimental to health and iii) interaction with hostile external environment or the effects of advancing age. The major preventable / reversible damage caused by the reasons mentioned above maybe grouped into : 1. Diseases
caused by disturbed immune system (Immuno-deficiencies) Etio-pathology, pathogenesis, symptomatology, early diagnosis and the measures to – i) keep them at bay, ii) check their growth or iii) mitigate the agonies by them may be of interest to one and all. Major aspect of all the above shall be discussed with a view to impart atleast some information on achieving partial relief in chronic ailments. By - Dr. Vijay Chauhan, Mumbai, India.
