Dear Dr. Shah, 2)
Dear Dr Prerek Shah, I would consider it to be very beneficial to start a
open reference and directory service where people from all over the world
can learn about where there are ayurvedic clinics, reactionaries and
schools can be found. This directory could include a "who is where at
what time" section. Maybe a directory like this exists already - if
you know about it, please point me in the right direction. Thank you for
your great effort. Dear Christa, I am much pleased with your
suggestions, infect we did tried in the past through Ayulink to create
such directory or data-base, but we got very few replies. Yet, I would
like to include your note in next issue of Ayulink. Let's hope some more
thoughts on the subject. 3)
Hello, Dr. Shah, Here is my thought about human life, which I would like
to share with all friends. Kindly include in the Ayulink. Thank you for
your kind service. HUMAN LIFE - A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Ayurveda is the knowledge of Ayu, i.e., the life. Life, according to this science, is an assembly of physical as well as metaphysical components such as corporeal body, senso-motor organs, mind and soul and is capable of performing certain vital and meaningful functions. An understanding about the life begins with the knowledge of Swasthya, i.e., good health which means the positive state of body, mind and soul rewarding an individual with a sense of happiness, rejoice and contentment. The opposite of this is Roga, i.e, sickness, disease, ailment, sorrow, grief or malady. Ayurveda throws light on various aspects of the journey of life wherein good health acts as a perfect vehicle to make the journey a pleasant experience whereas the abused health brings in the negatives like grief, frustration, envy or diseases that in turn mar the pleasures of such a lovely affair on earth. While discussing the quality of life, Ayurveda gives a strong emphasis on : protecting the health first and treating the disease secondly. SWASTHASYA SWASTHYA RAKSHANAM, ATURASYA VIKARA PRASHAMANAM Ayurveda is the only life-science that elaborates on the meaningfulness of life too, besides describing the importance of a healthy, happy and contented life. During the course of such discussions, the importance of social, moral, personal, cultural and psycho-spiritual values is highlighted in the name of Sadvritta. Their close association with the well-being of an individual and his community is also thoroughly explained in age-old Ayurvedic texts. Similarly, Ayurveda recommends some set of rules with regard to individuals: a) personal dispositions, b) age, c) habitat and d) interaction with seasonal variations which, if properly understood and complied with, may be highly contributory to maintain good health and achieve happiness. In which way, the above principles of Sadvritta positively influence the health, psyche and productivity of individuals and help them form a worthy society shall be discussed in light of some scientific explanations.

The Purpose of Ayurveda (continued from last issue) The highest development of intelligence is discrimination. And it is precisely the lack of discrimination that has led to the dominance of mechanical thought in the health sciences. The human being is an alive, psychosomatic, phenomenon that can never be totally understood by its parts. This is both the limitation and gift of mechanical medicine - the knowledge and treatment of the parts. However, true health is a dynamic expansion of homeostasis - it is not static - when it becomes static we call it death or suspended animation. Mechanical medicine sees health as the lack of symptoms. By this definition living on pills and medications for twenty or thirty years is health - because there are no symptoms. This shows a lack of discrimination between the static and dynamic states of health. The return of Ayurveda to its proper place as a major world medicine can only happen if its primary goal is met - developing intelligence and discrimination. This is the main global issue of today - increasing the level of human intelligence. If this occurs both Dharma and Moksha can be restored as the primary goals of humanity. It is the global obsession with Artha and Kama that is quickly destroying society and all natural resources. The global predominate of mechanical medicine and petroleum based pharmaceuticals is primarily due to its commercialization. Allopathic dominance is actually a question of economics and when Artha dominates any society or system then intelligence diminishes. Similarly, this is why Ayurveda has declined in social acceptance. The Ayurvedic system is based on ayur - life, or the dynamic, animated aspect of consciousness. If Ayurveda as a system blindly remains rigid and non-receptive to social changes then this too is a lack of discrimination. Failure to comprehend social changes leaves society in general viewing the system as old fashion. The present poor regulations on Ayurvedic medicines is one example of this failure. Modern economics requires commercially grown and prepared medicines instead of individuals manufacturing their own medications and relying on questionable merchants who often sell adulterated raw materials. Hence, the modern dilemma is to live in such a way that the homeostasis of the body is not severely deranged through a fast paced, stressful life. The obvious way to do this is to live intelligently - in accord with your individual capacity, situation and environment. In other words to live according to Ayurveda. And it is this intelligent, individualized approach of Ayurveda that is fast pushing it to the forefront of medical systems in Western countries. Isn't it time we all begin to live in a more intelligent manner?
