From Classical texts (Samhitas):

The indication of the Mind:

The mind which is super sensual is designated 'Satva' or Psyche and some call it 'Chetah' (consciousness). Its function is dependent on the pre-sense of the mental object and the spirit . it is the cause of the activity of the sense organs.

(Charak Samhita, Sutra Sthan, Chapter 8, Shloka 4)

Interesting Question of the Month:

Sent: Friday, July 13, 2001 10:42 AM Subject: Question for Dr.Shah

Dear sir,

I need your help to clarify some doubts. It was suggested to me to take a compound made from equal qty of powder shathavari, avipattikar, yastimadhu, and 1/4 proportion of shanks bahsma in a dosage of 4grams for stomach disorder like mild burning sensation, gastric and very mild duodenal ulcer. I live in a very hot climate place wherein due to my job nature i have to move in and out of air-conditioned environment often. I was suggested to take Agastia rasayanam to keep my respiratory systems in good health. I suffer from cold, running nose, dry cough at times leads to light fever at times.

Now, my question is :

Is the two set of medicines can be taken together ? I understand the agastia rasayana may help to enhance warmth in the body to fight respiratory disorders. Due to this will it not do some harm to my stomach linings etc.. Please guide me in this matter at the earliest. I enjoy browsing your well presented site and i felt yor are the right person to get the clarification. Thanks and regards. Pl help me.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your interest in Ayurveda.

Often this kind of question arises in the mind of many Ayurveda lovers.

Actually, when you know / learn Ayurveda, it is clearly mentioned that in every case you can not do asymptomatic treatments. One good Vaidya (Ayurveda Doctor) must learn dosha - knowledge of aggravation and pacified doshas, dhatus and sub-doshas and sub-dhatus and when you diagnose some body, one good Vaidya should consider many factors like ; age, dosha, dhatu, kal-time, country, duration, bal - strength and stamina etc....

For example - when you try to treat Kapha and Vata complains at the same time - you will be in puzzle. Kapha pacifying treatments will increase Vata, and Vata pacifying treatments will increase Kapha. so how can you treat them at the same time ?

Now here comes the knowledge and experience of Vaidya. One Vaidya should consider all factors - not only dosha, but all which I above mentioned and then finalize the medicines or treatments.

Some herbs / medicines are having such properties to control both Vata - Kapha doshas, but I strongly suggest to consider all factors before diagnose and finalizing the treatment.

With best wishes and kind regards.

Dr. Prerak Shah

PILLARS OF GOOD HEALTH

While the benefits of an active life and physical exercise have been conveyed in the chapters of Dincharya (daily routine), a special mention is made on the virtues of the i) right food habits, ii) regular sleeping habits and iii) sensible indulgence in sex in Ayurveda and they are collectively titled as Swasthya Traya Upasthanbhas, i.e., the three pillars supporting the structure of health.

Besides the suitability of different Aahar, i.e. types of food and the recipes made thereof to different body types, Ayurvedic literature offers elaborate guideline on the importance of nutritional values, the methods of food intake; cooking techniques; compatibility and incompatibilities of different recipes and their affect on digestion and metabolism.

Similarly the phase of sleep that helps a tired body to get relaxed and instill the energy for the next day matters a lot in holding the physical as well as mental well being. In other words Nidra i.e. sleep is that essential activity which takes us into the world of Tama (darkness) so as to strengthen our Sattwa (Brightness of mind) and activate the Raja (Agility) thus create a harmony by providing adequate rest. While lack of sleep takes off the mental balance, its excess results into lethargy, inertia and metabolic diseases.

For a well-grown adult, the fulfillment of carnal desires is almost as necessary consumption of food but, Ayurveda believes that the mankind, who is superior to other animals by virtue of its improved mental faculties and who is used to live a disciplined life should indulge into sex sensibly so that it contributes to good health, mental peace and longevity. The knowledge of Brahmacharya i.e., interaction with the almighty revolved around controlled engagements in carnal knowledge.

Age old scientific views with regard to following the rules on food, sleep / rest and sex shall be discussed.
