Clinical application of Ghee in Ayurveda Practice

***********************

Cont………

In treatment of ‘Akshitarpan’ (a panchkarma procedure for eyes) :
Several hundred patients with eye problems were advised for ‘Akshitarpan’ treatment. Normally ghee (Trifla ghee, Jivantyadi ghee or plain ghee) is being poured in the dam like structure made surrounding the eye with wheat dove in this treatment. It is very useful in eye burning, short sight and other eye problems. Patients reported significant benefits in their complains

In Nasya - Panchkarma treatment :
Nasya is one of the five kind of purification methods (Panchkarma) described in Ayurveda. Usually panchkarma is applied for complete eradication of the disease process.  The nasal administration of herbal preparation (medicinal oil, ghee, pure ghee, fresh juice or powder) is called nasya. Vitiated doshas from the sinus, throat, nose or head areas (upper respiratory zone) are eliminated through the nose - the nearest exit. Nasya can affect the brain and sensory and motor functions (mental activities, memory, concentration and intellectual activities). After snehan (face massage) and swedan (heat with palms or cloths on face), The pure ghee / oil or medicinal ghee / oil, juice or powder is put into both nostrils of the laid down patient on his back with slightly tilted head. During past 14 years, several hundreds patients have been benefited with this treatment. Different type of ghee is recommended according to the condition of the patient. Some common example is given under; For common cold & sneezing : plain ghee or castor oil can be used. For pittaj haedache : pure ghee, shatavari ghee can be used For tension, stress and mental activities – Brahmi ghee can be used.

General intake of ghee as procedure of panchkarma / Ayurveda treatment :

In various disorders ghee is used as therapeutic measures as well as supportive to panchkarma treatments.

Internal uses of some ghees for example,

  • In skin disorders – panchtikta ghee, khadiradi ghee, argwadh ghee etc.
  • In general weakness – ashwagandha ghee, shatavari ghee etc.
  • In mental stress, tension anxiety, anger etc. – brahmi ghee, ashwagandha ghee etc.
  • To improve digestion & G. I. Tract disorders – trifla ghee, shatavari ghee, jirakadi ghee, argwadh ghee, ardraka ghee etc.

There are 54 different types of medicated ghee formulations are described in Government Pharmacopoeia and are available in the local market.

It was preached that ‘one must consume ghee, even if you have to borrow money for it’. Our ancestors were living in the age of “Rivers of Milk and Ghee” which shows their prosperity and importance of ghee in daily life. Let us come together and work jointly to bring back the same prosperity in country again.
