Iron - Supplemental iron taken orally over a period of six weeks has been shown to be
effective in the treatment of elderly patients suffering from iron deficiency
anemia. For normal supplements, smaller doses are
advised. Too much can contribute to heart disease.

Melatonin - the pineal hormone melatonin
is best known for its role in promoting sleep. While the number of studies
continue to increase concerning its potential in this area, new research also
suggests it may have a much wider array of potential benefits.
Results of numerous studies have shown the
following:
- may delay the effects of aging by attenuating negative
effects associated with free radical-induced neuronal damage
- a potent free radical scavenger that acts as a primary nonenzymatic
antioxidative defense against the destruction caused by hydroxyl free radicals
- can slow the rate of aging and the time of onset of age-related
diseases
- may also act directly against some of
the key degenerative diseases associated with aging, most notably cancer
- combined with tamoxifen induced objective tumor regressions
in metastatic breast cancer patients
- remissions and disease
stabilizations in renal cell carcinoma patients
- animal studies indicate melatonin
has cardioprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-glucocorticoid, anti-convulsnt,
anti-cataract, and immunoenhancing effects
- improves adrenal function; can
reduce the severity of colitis, seizures, brain injury, and gastric lesions;
delayed disease onset and death are due to viral encephalitis
- has exhibited cytoprotective and antioxidant activity in vitro.
The ideal dose of melatonin varies widely across
individuals, but experts believe 3 to 10 mg taken at night will produce effects
in most people.

NAC N-acetyl-l-cysteine is a proven cancer
fighter in animal studies and in vitro, and has shown great promise across a
number of other degenerative conditions. Heart disease is one where studies
support the use of NAC. Administration of NAC has
significantly increased cardiac output and reduced systemic vascular resistance
in patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring due to sepsis syndrome. Results of
another study found that intravenous administration of NAC coupled with intravenous isosorbide
denitrate led to partial prevention of anti-anginal effect tolerance often
associated with isosorbide treatment alone in anginal patients.

Omega Fatty Acids are found in many kinds
of fish and various oils, including flaxseed oil, linseed oil, and evening
primrose oil. Numerous studies have shown clinical benefits following ingestion
of n-3 fatty acids in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Omega fatty acids may also
be useful in the treatment and prevention of cancer.
Results of numerous studies have shown the
following:
- supplementation with
arginine, RNA, and omega-3
fatty acids in the early postoperative time period have improved postoperative
immunologic responses in patients undergoing surgery for gastrointestinal cancer
- daily supplementation
has chemopreventative effects in patients suffering from sporadic
adenomatous colorectal polyps.
- small
doses of oral omega-3 fatty acids had significant positive effects on platelet
activity
- consumption of a
fish oil diet containing 24 g of omega-3 fatty acids per day for gout reduced LDL plasma levels
- oral
administration of high levels of omega-3 fatty acids dramatically reduced VLDL
triglyceride levels associated with high-carbohydrate diet in healthy subjects
- daily supplementation
with omega-3 fatty acids had antihypertensive and
hypotriglyceridaemic effects in hypertensive patients taking either beta
blockers or diuretics for the disease
- daily supplementation with
omega-3 fatty acids
over a period of four weeks led to positive changes with respect to vascular
risk factors common to type 1 insulin-dependent diabetics.

Phosphatidylserine - A phospholipid
component of brain cell membranes, phosphatidylserine has exhibited direct
anti-aging effects in animal studies. One has indicated it can improve the
release of acetylcholine in aging rats and balanced age-altered enzymatic functions in rats.
Results of numerous studies have shown the
following:
- administered to aging rats can
restore acetylcholine by maintaining a sufficient level in the cortical slices
- can decrease the number of seizures due to spontaneous EEG bursts by 65%
and the length of seizure duration by 70%
- led to a reduction in decreases in acetylcholine
release due to age by influencing mechanism of stimulus-secretion coupling in
rats
- daily doses
led to significant, short-term neuropsychological improvements and significant clinical improvements in patients with mild primary
degenerative dementia
- has promise for cancer and
heart disease
- bovine cortex phosophatidylserine has significantly
reduced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice, while not inhibiting
effector T-cells
- parental administration of liposomes
containing the aminophospholipids phosphatidylserine and
phosphatidylethanolamine is an efficient mode to decrease the endotoxin-induced
production of tumor necrosis factor in mice and rabbits
- animal studies indicate positive immune enhancing effects and reduce the clinical severity and
mortality in allergic neuritis
- benefits for
schizophrenia and epilepsy patients
- positive effects for
physical stress relief
Phosphatidylserine should not be taken with
anticoagulant medication. The suggested dose is 100 to 200 mg taken orally twice
per day, or 100 to 250 mg per day intravenously.
